Timothy Olyphant, known for his roles in "Justified" and "Deadwood," disclosed his surprisingly low-tech lifestyle during a recent appearance on the "SmartLess" podcast. The actor admitted that he does not own a computer and had to go to considerable lengths to participate in the interview with hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes.
Olyphant recounted that he had to retrieve an old desktop computer from his home and attempt to make it functional to join the podcast. "I needed a computer," he told the hosts. "I guess you can't do your show if you don't own a computer."
When pressed by Bateman about his lack of digital devices, Olyphant stated, "I got like a, you know, I got a phone and I got a thing. That's all you gotta do."
Bateman expressed disbelief, questioning if Olyphant, as an artist, didn't possess an iPad or similar device. Olyphant explained that the desktop he did own had been unused for so long that getting it to work presented its own challenges, involving outdated USB connections.
Despite the technical hurdles, Olyphant expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to be on the podcast, noting that he reads the transcripts of the show. "There's a lot of sacrifices that went into this guys," he joked. "And don't get me wrong, I appreciate ... I'm super honored, and it is a pleasure to be here. I'm a big fan. I listen – I don't listen – but I read the transcripts. And the show's very good. Very, very, very good."
Bateman further inquired if Olyphant had ever been tempted to acquire a laptop or desktop to explore online content. Olyphant replied, "Felt condescending."
The conversation then shifted to artificial intelligence, with Bateman asking if Olyphant had any curiosity about the technology. Olyphant maintained his stance, suggesting that such information could be accessed via his phone. "But you can do all that on… on the little phones," he emphasized.
Olyphant's career began with a breakthrough role in the 1999 film "Go." He later gained significant recognition for his performances in the television series "Deadwood" and "Justified." His other notable credits include "Santa Clarita Diet," "The Mandalorian," "The Book of Boba Fett," and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood."
