The Kid Laroi and Tate McRae both attended the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday but were not seen together at the ceremony, the Daily Mail reported.

Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard, known professionally as the Kid Laroi, arrived on the red carpet in a white tuxedo jacket paired with a black buttoned shirt, shiny black shoes and a silver watch. McRae posed on the red carpet in a black leotard and stockings and later accepted awards, smiling as she held trophies after winning Song of Summer and Best Editing.

The appearance marked a clear contrast with the pair’s behaviour at last year’s VMAs, when they were photographed displaying affection on the red carpet and entering the venue hand in hand. At that ceremony, the Kid Laroi wrapped his arm around McRae and kissed her on the cheek while they spoke with other performers, including Lil Nas X and Chappell Roan, according to earlier reports.

The couple publicly confirmed their relationship in 2024. Laroi acknowledged the romance during a concert in Ireland on April 14 of that year. Reports say the pair appeared to have split in July after Laroi said they were "on good terms" amid fan accusations that his team had paid for derogatory social-media posts about McRae.

Earlier this year, the singers shared images from a tropical getaway that they posted to social media with friends, including Olivia Rodrigo and Louis Partridge. The posts featured outtakes of the holiday and affectionate captions: McRae used a string of emoji alongside a note that she had nearly cried at a waterfall, while Laroi’s caption read simply "#blessed," according to the Daily Mail.

Representatives for the artists did not provide immediate comment to the Daily Mail. Both performers continue to appear at major industry events and maintain large social-media followings as they promote their work.

The separate appearances at this year’s VMAs underline a visible shift from the pair’s previously public relationship. McRae’s wins at the ceremony add to her recent accolades, while the Kid Laroi maintained a low-profile presence on the night despite his red-carpet arrival.
