Production has commenced on a third movie installment of the popular British sitcom The Inbetweeners. The film will see the return of the four main actors, Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, and Joe Thomas, reprising their roles as Will McKenzie, Jay Cartwright, Neil Sutherland, and Simon Cooper, respectively.
Creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris are back to write and direct the new project. A teaser clip released for the film shows the quartet gathered in Simon Cooper's iconic yellow 1996 Fiat Cinquecento, which notably fails to start.
The upcoming film follows the original Channel 4 series, which aired between 2008 and 2010, and two previous films released in 2011 and 2014. A reunion special, "The Inbetweeners Fwends Reunited," aired in 2019.
While the return of the main cast has been confirmed, reports suggest that producers are also hoping to bring back Emily Atack, who played Charlotte Hinchcliffe. Atack's potential involvement has been a point of discussion following a past incident where she reportedly did not participate in the 2019 reunion due to a previous relationship with James Buckley.
Atack has been active in other television projects, including the Disney series "Rivals" and a BBC program titled "Reputation." She also hosts the ITV game show "Nobody's Fool."
The 2019 reunion special received mixed reactions from fans and critics. Some viewers described the program as "toe-curling" and "cringeworthy," while others expressed confusion over its format, expecting a new episode rather than a retrospective chat show. The Telegraph's review called the special a "shambolic mess."
Details regarding the plot or release date for the third film have not yet been fully disclosed, though production began on Monday, September 7, 2026. If filming proceeds as planned, the movie could potentially be released in 2027. The production team includes Claire Jones, Patrick Holland, and Mark Lesbirel as producers, with Beesley, Morris, Caroline Levy, Caroline Leddy, Phil Gilbert, Suzanne Knight, Tom Jordan, and Farhana Bhula serving as executive producers.
