Mooove over, mud mask and cucumber slices? Stonyfield Organic is set to launch what it claims is the first-ever "organic cow spa" in Sidney, Maine, offering human guests a chance to experience a day inspired by the care routines of dairy cows.
The limited-time experience, available from September 10 to October 3, will be held at Rainbow Valley Farm. For $120, visitors can engage in a variety of activities designed to promote relaxation and a connection with nature, mirroring the lifestyle of organic cows.
Farm-Inspired Relaxation
The spa experience is rooted in Stonyfield's "farm-inspired care philosophy," according to Kristina Drociak, Stonyfield Director of PR and Consumer Engagement. "We’re inviting guests to embrace their own version of that philosophy: slow down, unplug, spend time outdoors and enjoy a little udder relaxation," Drociak said. "It’s not about literally feeling like a cow — it’s about giving people a firsthand, memorable look at the care behind organic farming."
Activities include cow cuddling, which research suggests can reduce anxiety and increase oxytocin, often called the "love hormone." The spa will offer human-friendly massages inspired by the grooming and brushing cows receive. This practice helps cows reduce stress, avoid lameness, and can even increase milk production. For human guests, similar massage benefits include improved circulation and decreased inflammation. Peppermint essential oils, which some Stonyfield farms use to promote immune function in cows, can also be incorporated into human massages for potential digestive, headache, and muscle tension relief.
Nature and Nourishment
Guests can also participate in farm walks to enjoy fresh air and connect with the outdoors, a key requirement for USDA organic cows who must have access to pasture, sunlight, and freedom of movement. A "pasture-inspired" meditation and journaling lounge is designed to let visitors "embrace the open-air lifestyle of an organic cow." This draws on the fact that cows can lay down for up to 16 hours a day, while studies show that spending at least two hours per week in nature offers significant health benefits for humans, including boosted immunity and cognitive function.
The spa experience also extends to "hoof care" for humans with a "pasture pedicure," designed to provide attention to the feet similar to the importance of hoof care for cows in preventing pain and walking issues. To complete the experience, guests can enjoy a "green graze" juice made from organic ingredients like kale, spinach, lemon, celery, parsley, and wheatgrass.
The $120 cost is a nod to the USDA's organic standard, which requires cows to spend a minimum of 120 days grazing on pasture. Bookings are available via stonyfieldorganiccowspa.com.
