Stephen A. Smith drew criticism from fellow sports-media figures after comments he made about Molly Qerim’s sudden departure from ESPN were characterized as exacerbating an already fraught situation.

The initial report of Qerim’s exit, published late Monday by Sports Business Journal, was followed by a message from Qerim on Instagram acknowledging the news and indicating it had come out sooner than she intended. ESPN did not release detailed reasons for the split; Smith and other colleagues provided limited public commentary as the matter unfolded.

Qerim, who had been a presence on First Take for 10 years, was absent from the show on Tuesday. Smith hosted in her place, offered an emotional sendoff on air and later addressed the situation on his self-titled YouTube program. On the show, Smith described the matter as related to contract negotiations and said Qerim decided to "walk away from the show effective immediately." He added, "The details, quite frankly, are none of y'all's business," and said he would not disclose further information, though he said he had "an idea." He also expressed appreciation for Qerim’s contributions and said he would miss her.

That combination of disclosure and refusal to provide specifics drew rebuke from hosts of the Speakeasy podcast — Emmanuel Acho, Kieran Hickey-Semple and LeSean McCoy — who criticized Smith’s tone and the impression it created. "Your tone and then you saying, 'You know, the details are none of y'all business, I don't even know.' What? You're just making it so much worse," Hickey-Semple said after the program played Smith's remarks. Acho said Smith's comments were inconsistent, noting, "He said she abruptly resigned. That's a detail. And then you're going to say, 'But don't ask me the details because I'm not going to tell you all, that's none of your business. Oh, and I don't know the details.'"

Speakeasy co-hosts framed their critique as a reaction to the tone and the implication that something untoward had occurred. "He made it sound like something wild happened, and there is no reason for that," Hickey-Semple said.

ESPN has not released additional information about negotiations or the timeline that led to Qerim’s departure. The outlet’s on-air lineup and internal staffing decisions are typically handled by network executives; Smith said on his show that ESPN did not want to lose Qerim during negotiations. Qerim’s Instagram letter acknowledged that the public learned of the departure sooner than she had planned and suggested she would share more on her own terms.

The exchange illustrates the tensions that can arise when high-profile departures are reported in real time and commented on by colleagues who are both friends and public figures. With Qerim absent from First Take and her future broadcasts on ESPN unresolved, viewers and industry observers have been left to await any additional statements from Qerim or the network.
