Zolani Mahola's formative years in the eastern cape of South Africa during the 1980s were shaped by the racial segregation of Apartheid, a system her family actively worked to shield her from. Following the early death of her mother, Mahola found solace and purpose in the performing arts, discovering her passion on stage.

During her university studies in Cape Town, Mahola became the lead vocalist for Freshlyground, a groundbreaking band known for its multi-racial composition and eclectic musical style. A pivotal moment in the band's career came through a chance encounter that led to the creation of "Waka Waka," the most streamed song for the FIFA World Cup. The track, a collaboration with Colombian music star Shakira, was chosen as the official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, hosted in South Africa, marking the first time the tournament was held on the African continent.
