Twenty years after its conception and over 15 years since its release, Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" continues to resonate, having been streamed more than two billion times and named the UK's most-played radio song of the 21st century in 2019. Frontman Gary Lightbody described the song's enduring success as largely accidental, stemming from a casual songwriting session in 2005.
Lightbody and producer Jacknife Lee were in a garden shed, having written 10 songs over several bottles of wine, with the initial intention of creating material for other artists. This approach, Lightbody explained, reduced the pressure of personal investment. "Sometimes, that takes the pressure off because you're not thinking about how you're going to record it, or what it means to have that song become part of your life," he said.
It was during this session that Lightbody stumbled upon the chord progression and initial lyric, "If I lay here / If I just lay here / Would you lie with me and just breathe in the world?" This moment marked a shift, and the band realized they had found something significant.
Evolution of a Hit
Despite the breakthrough, the song underwent months of refinement before its official release. An early, unfinished version recorded in Seattle in 2005, which featured different lyrics reflecting Lightbody's unrequited feelings, can be found online. The initial lyrics were "You come to me / With these three words / 'Not right now'." This storyline was eventually replaced with a more romantic narrative. The song's title, "Chasing Cars," was borrowed from a phrase Lightbody's father used to describe his son's unsuccessful romantic pursuits: "You're like a dog chasing a car."
The finished version of "Chasing Cars" was released in June 2006 as the second single from Snow Patrol's fourth album, "Eyes Open." While it initially peaked at number six on the UK singles chart, its popularity surged after being featured in the American medical drama "Grey's Anatomy." The song has since become the UK's eighth best-selling song of the 2000s, with over 1.2 million copies sold.
New Music and Collaborations
Lightbody also touched upon the band's recent work, including a new single with Kylie Minogue. He clarified that their collaboration is not a duet, suggesting a different form of musical partnership.
Reflecting on the immense success of "Chasing Cars," Lightbody expressed a sense of bewilderment. "The numbers are ridiculous," he stated. "It doesn't make any sense in any kind of real way where you can go, 'These are the things that we did to become successful.' All of it happened by accident."
