Season 3, Episode 4 of Apple TV+'s "Silo," titled "Whatever You Do, Don’t Go Home," shifts focus to the past with pre-apocalyptic flashbacks, aiming to answer the central question of why the inhabitants live underground. The episode features investigative journalist Helen Drew, portrayed by Jessica Henwick, and idealistic freshman congressman Daniel Keene, played by Ashley Zukerman, in storylines that, while well-acted, are described as functional rather than deeply engaging.
The flashback narrative explores a potential romance between Drew and Keene, which the review notes feels somewhat forced despite the actors' chemistry. Their investigation into a "disappearing dark-web guy" culminates in an attempt to buy them off, but Keene uncovers information that solidifies his resolve. The episode employs dialogue and plot developments reminiscent of "Conspiracy Thriller 101," with characters making significant logical leaps in their amateur sleuthing.
Elements of the present-day storyline also exhibit similar pacing issues. Nurse Amy, who has become more sympathetic, is depicted as stalling rather than directly providing information. Similarly, Robert Sims, while leading a search for Juliette, openly reveals details within earshot of Shirley, a repentant friend of Juliette's. This narrative technique is compared to an NPC in a video game providing information to the player.
Despite these criticisms, the subterranean setting is considered more compelling than typical political thrillers, and the confined environment lends a rationale to the frequent coincidental encounters experienced by Juliette. The episode sees Juliette and Amy become targets, pursued by Sims and his enforcers, even more intensely than Lukas and Patrick Kennedy, who debate the nature of the outside world.
Juliette's escape is aided by Amy, who sacrifices herself to allow Juliette to evade a raid. Juliette heads to a safe room tipped off by Amy, only to find Robert Sims waiting. Although Sims makes no move to apprehend her, suggesting he was the one who intervened earlier, Juliette flees and encounters Shirley. Shirley guides Juliette to a sealed-off area known as the "digger void," which was supposedly secured by Juliette's mentor, Walker. However, Juliette discovers a hidden living space containing Bernard Holland, who is alive and apparently unconcerned by her arrival.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Paul continues his own investigation into the murder of Orla Kent. His questioning of Orla's professional rival, Glenda Harwood, yields a hostile but seemingly innocent response. Suspicion falls on Orla's boyfriend, Mike, who is also Glenda's former boyfriend, as he may be connected to the disappearance of their boss, Carla McLain. There is speculation that Carla might be among those living in the void with Bernard and Walker.
Despite the episode's narrative shortcomings, the review expresses anticipation for future revelations, particularly regarding the mystery of their underground existence. The show's tight focus and the performances, especially Rebecca Ferguson as Juliette, are highlighted as strengths that keep viewers engaged and invested in uncovering the truth.
