The key to a successful marriage may lie in shared quietude, according to a recent study. Researchers found that couples who regularly watch television series or movies together and refrain from talking during the program reported feeling closer and having stronger relationships.
The study, which tracked 84 couples, was published in the journal Personal Relationships. Approximately one-third of the participating couples indicated that they frequently enjoyed watching TV together.
Researchers from Ben Gurion University in Israel suggest that shared experiences, such as watching television, can increase closeness and connection. They noted that these moments can foster intimate experiences, including shared laughter, crying, and physical touch. While the study found that discussing a show afterward could further enhance a couple's bond, engaging in conversation during the program appeared to diminish these positive effects.
Previous research has also indicated that shared viewing habits, such as binge-watching television series, can strengthen feelings of connection between partners.
