Actor Sam Neill, celebrated for his roles in blockbusters like "Jurassic Park" and acclaimed series such as "Peaky Blinders," has died at the age of 78. His family announced his sudden passing on Monday in Sydney, Australia.
Friends and colleagues from across the film and television industry shared their grief and memories, remembering Neill as a gifted performer and a kind, generous individual.
Nicole Kidman, who co-starred with Neill in the 1989 thriller "Dead Calm," described him as "one of the greats" and "a joy to be around." She recalled meeting Neill at 18 and noted he "took me under his wing." Kidman added, "He was charming, kind, funny and intelligent. He will be greatly missed, and my heart goes out to his family."
Toni Collette, who worked with Neill on "A Long Way Down" and "Dirty Deeds," posted an emotional tribute on Instagram Stories. "My friend Sam left us this morning. Yes, he was an incredible actor. But he was also the most beautiful, decent gentleman. A big hearted king with a dry, hilarious wit," Collette wrote. "When I think of Sam I always see him giggling. It is a terribly sad day. Rest in peace, dear Sam."
Richard E. Grant reflected on a friendship spanning three decades, noting Neill's support during a difficult period in his life. "Knew @samneilltheprop for 3 decades and finally worked with him on Palm Beach in 2018. An officer and a Gentleman in the truest sense," Grant posted.
Cillian Murphy, Neill's co-star in "Peaky Blinders," stated, "Like everyone who knew and worked with Sam, I admired him and adored him in equal measure. He was one of the kindest, funniest and gentlest people, and one of the finest actors… RIP."
Other notable figures shared their condolences, including Joe Cole, who called Neill "big dog," and fellow New Zealander Karl Urban, who described Neill as "an inspiration for many who followed in his trailblazing footsteps. A beautiful man, a national treasure who gave so much to New Zealand and to the world."
Luke Hemsworth remembered Neill's "humor, your heart and your wisdom," adding, "You were loved and You will be missed."
Kylie Minogue offered a simple "Vale Sam," the Latin word for farewell, while Alan Cumming remembered him as a "glorious beautiful man."
Sebastian Roché recalled working with Neill on "Merlin," stating, "not only was he a brilliant actor, but he was such a wonderful person as well. Thank you for kindness and humour fabulous Sam."
Neill's family confirmed his passing, noting that he died "with the dignity that has characterized his whole life." They also stated that the loss was "sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free," referencing his recent recovery from stage 3 blood cancer, which he announced in April.
