Sam Neill, the actor celebrated for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park," died at the age of 78. His family announced his death on Monday, July 13th, stating he passed away peacefully in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by loved ones.

Just weeks before his death, Neill attended the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) hall of fame ceremony in June. He shared photographs on Instagram from the event, where singer Jenny Morris was inducted by former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Neill expressed his admiration for Morris and other honored women, referring to Ardern as a "hero."

The ARIA hall of fame event, which marked 40 years of the music awards, had plans that were finalized in September 2024. Unlike previous years where inductees were honored during the main ARIA Awards ceremony, this standalone event recognized the significant contributions to the Australian music landscape. The 2026 ARIA Awards were scheduled to take place in November.

Neill's family noted in their announcement that his passing was sudden and unexpected, but they were comforted by the fact that he had recently been declared cancer-free. He had been undergoing treatment for angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare blood cancer. The family expressed gratitude to the staff at St. Vincent's Private Hospital for their care and requested privacy during their period of mourning.

Neill, who moved to New Zealand in his childhood, also attended the Sydney Film Festival in June 2026. Festival organizers remembered him as an actor whose bravery and craft, infectious spirit, and support for emerging filmmakers left a lasting impression.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to Neill, stating that he would be "mourned and long remembered." Albanese highlighted Neill's starring roles in many beloved Australian stories and his ability to fight illness with the same dignity, humor, and conviction that defined his performances.
