Sacha Baron Cohen, acclaimed for his satirical characters Borat and Ali G, has been cast in Quentin Tarantino’s forthcoming stage play, tentatively titled "The Popinjay Cavalier." The production, set to premiere in London in early 2027, marks Tarantino's directorial debut in theater.
A source close to the project revealed that Cohen will portray a character described as a "Douglas Fairbanks type," serving as the romantic lead in the play. "The Popinjay Cavalier" is described as a swashbuckling comedy, a departure from the violent and profane style often associated with Tarantino's filmography. The filmmaker, known for movies such as "Pulp Fiction" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," has previously stated his intention to direct only 10 films.
This venture into live theater is a new territory for both Tarantino and Cohen. Tarantino, who wrote the play, has never staged a theatrical production before. Cohen, while a seasoned comedic actor, has no prior professional stage experience. Insiders have expressed curiosity about Cohen's ability to meet the demands of a live stage role.
Sources indicate that "The Popinjay Cavalier" is a substantial production, envisioned as "a movie onstage" with elaborate sets and numerous scenes. The play is slated to open at the Phoenix Theatre, following the run of "Stranger Things: First Shadow."
Cohen has recently been involved in public disputes. In 2024, actress Rebel Wilson detailed in her memoir "Rebel Rising" alleged instances of Cohen pressuring her into nude scenes during the filming of "Grimsby" and attempting to impede her promotional tour for the book. Cohen's representative denied these claims. Additionally, a push is underway in the UK to prevent Cohen's upcoming mockumentary, "Ali G: Who Iz I?," from being shown in cinemas, with critics deeming the satirical character stereotypical and offensive.
Reports suggest Cohen was not the initial choice for the role, with several other prominent actors reportedly passing on the opportunity.
