Rob Reiner made history at the 2026 Emmys with a posthumous win for Best Guest Actor in a Comedy for his role as Albert on FX's "The Bear." The award extended a family legacy, breaking a record previously held by his father, Carl Reiner.
Reiner, who died in December 2025, last won an Emmy in 1978 for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for "All in the Family." The 48 years between his two acting Emmy wins now holds the record for the longest interval between wins, surpassing the 37-year gap held by his father, Carl Reiner, between his wins for "Caesar's Hour" in 1958 and "Mad About You" in 1995. This marks the first posthumous Emmy awarded for an on-camera performance since 1995, when Raúl Julia received an award for "The Burning Season."
The win occurred at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony, which precedes the main Primetime Emmy Awards. While not televised live, audience members reportedly gave Reiner's win a lengthy standing ovation. Presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the award on Reiner's behalf.
Reiner's nomination in July came six months after his death. His three guest appearances on "The Bear" aired in June 2025, following the murders of himself and his wife, Michele Reiner, in their California home in December 2025. Their youngest son, Nick Reiner, has pleaded not guilty to charges in connection with their deaths, with a pre-trial hearing scheduled for September 15.
Social media users expressed appreciation for Reiner's achievement, with one noting the significance of an artist delivering a celebrated performance at the end of a long career. Rob and Michele Reiner are also survived by their other children, Jake and Romy, and Rob's daughter Tracy from a previous relationship.
