The Viki K-drama Reborn Rookie, based on San Kyung's web novel, wrapped its run with a finale that tied up loose ends regarding corporate intrigue, familial revenge, and a central body-swap premise. The series, which differentiates itself from its thematic predecessor Reborn Rich by leaning into comedy, followed a CEO and a soccer player who inexplicably switch bodies.

The Setup and the Swap

At the outset, professional soccer player Hwang Jun-hyeon is living his dream, having secured a spot on the FC Choiseong roster. His lifelong ambition is not only a personal triumph but also a way to bring joy to his grandmother, who suffers from dementia and recognizes him primarily when he is in uniform. Simultaneously, Choiseong Group CEO Kang Yong-ho, a 72-year-old patriarch, grapples with his impending retirement and the question of which of his two greedy children, Kang Jae-gyeong or Kang Jae-seong, should inherit the company. After his elder children's recklessness leads to Jun-hyeon's career-ending injury, Yong-ho resolves not to name either as his successor. However, an accident involving a fall down the company stairs results in Yong-ho and Jun-hyeon, both in a state of distress, swapping bodies. Yong-ho awakens in the body of the young athlete, while Jun-hyeon is comatose in the elder CEO's body.

Revenge and Revelations

Trapped in Yong-ho's aging body, Jun-hyeon's consciousness experiences the CEO's quest for revenge against his self-serving children and efforts to secure the company's future. He receives unexpected assistance from his youngest child, Kang Bang-geul. Sent to America as a teenager and estranged due to bullying from her half-siblings, Bang-geul secretly infiltrates Choiseong Group as an intern, gathering information to expose corporate malfeasance.

A Hostile Takeover and a Return to Self

The series' climax introduces a new threat: Taeha Energy, led by Chairman Na and his daughter Na Eun-se, who is married to Jae-seong. They initiate a hostile takeover of Choiseong Group. During a confrontation where Chairman Na attempts to eliminate both Yong-ho and Jun-hyeon, the two men switch back to their original bodies. Yong-ho, now back in his 72-year-old form, realizes Jun-hyeon remains in danger and rushes to protect him. He offers Jun-hyeon a sincere apology, acknowledging his role in the hit-and-run and agreeing to help hold his children accountable.

Jun-hyeon, kept informed of Yong-ho's actions by Bang-geul, agrees to cooperate. Their combined strengths—Yong-ho's shrewdness and Jun-hyeon's integrity—prove effective. Yong-ho reflects on his children's ruthlessness, contrasting it with Bang-geul's inherent goodness.

Accountability and Consequences

The finale emphasizes accountability. Chairman Na is betrayed by his daughter Eun-se, who reveals his crimes to save herself. Jae-seong, remorseful, turns himself in for the hit-and-run, providing leverage against Jae-gyeong. Jae-gyeong is ultimately arrested for attempting to kill her father, embezzling corporate funds, and aiding in the cover-up of the hit-and-run. In a desperate attempt to escape, Jae-gyeong runs into the path of Eun-se's car. Yong-ho, despite his complex relationship with his daughter, intervenes and is severely injured, losing a leg. Jae-gyeong, mentally shattered, is institutionalized, her memory lost except for her husband.

A New Beginning

Two years later, a sense of resolution prevails. Jun-hyeon is a soccer coach and is dating Bang-geul, who has been promoted within Choiseong Group. The company has appointed Sang-jae, Yong-ho's loyal right-hand man, as CEO, prioritizing meritocracy over familial succession. The company has also transitioned to a worker-owned model. Jae-seong lives in the U.S. with his children, maintaining contact with his stepmother, Sun-hui, who has found success as a YouTube cooking personality. Jun-hyeon’s grandmother receives improved care and recognizes him more consistently.

In a final comedic scene, Yong-ho discovers Jun-hyeon and Bang-geul's relationship. A scuffle ensues, leading to Jun-hyeon accidentally bumping heads with K-pop star Ryujin of ITZY, resulting in another body swap. The series concludes with Ryujin in Jun-hyeon's body and Jun-hyeon in Ryujin's body, hinting at further comedic complications.
