Scottish actress Phyllida Law, a revered performer and the mother of actresses Emma and Sophie Thompson, died at the age of 94. Her manager confirmed that Law passed away "supremely peacefully at home, surrounded by all of her family."
Born in Glasgow in 1932, Law was accepted into the Bristol Old Vic Theatre school, initially intending to study stage design before transitioning to acting. It was at Bristol Old Vic in the 1950s that she met her husband, Eric Thompson, whom she married in 1957. Their daughters, Emma and Sophie Thompson, followed in their parents' footsteps, both becoming accomplished actresses.
Law's career began in the late 1950s with television appearances on shows such as "Dr. Finlay's Casebook," "Dixon of Dock Green," and "The Troubleshooters." She later developed a notable film career in the 1980s.
She appeared alongside her daughter Emma in Peter's Friends, directed by Emma's then-husband Kenneth Branagh. Law also starred with her other daughter, Sophie, in Jane Austen's "Emma." In a notable mother-daughter collaboration, Phyllida and Emma Thompson played mother and daughter in the 2001 film "The Winter Guest."
Law's filmography also includes "Much Ado About Nothing." She lent her voice to a role in the popular film "Nanny McPhee."
In recognition of her contributions, Law was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. She was pictured with her daughters Sophie and Emma at Buckingham Palace in November 2014 following the Investiture ceremony.
