Netflix has renewed the sitcom Leanne for a second season, the streaming service announced Monday, handing the comedy starring and executive produced by stand-up comic Leanne Morgan another run following what Netflix described as a strong debut.

The series, co-created by Morgan and Susan McMartin and executive produced by Chuck Lorre, follows a fictionalized version of Morgan as she navigates the break-up of a 33-year marriage with the support of her sister, played by Kristen Johnston. The ensemble also includes Ryan Stiles, Celia Weston, Tim Daly, Blake Clark, Hannah Pilkes, Graham Rogers and Jayma Mays. Netflix indicated the new season will likely comprise additional half-hour episodes, with industry reporting suggesting a full 16-episode order pending scheduling and production details.

In a statement to Netflix’s Tudum, Morgan celebrated the renewal and thanked viewers and the production team. “We’re coming back for a second season! I am so grateful to all the writers, producers, Netflix, WB, our amazing cast and especially for all the fans of the show,” she said. Lorre called Morgan “a comedic genius, a warm, loving human being, and an absolute joy to work with,” and expressed gratitude to Netflix for the opportunity.

Co-creator Susan McMartin said in earlier interviews that the writers were eager to continue exploring the lead character’s new chapter. McMartin told Decider in July that the creative team “found love” in the show’s characters and hoped to keep telling stories about a woman starting over. Lorre has also said he would welcome the chance to again work with actors from past projects, specifically mentioning Michael Douglas as someone he would love to incorporate into future plans for the series.

The renewal announcement comes as Morgan prepares to release her next Netflix stand-up special, Leanne Morgan: Unspeakable Things, which the streamer has scheduled to premiere Nov. 4. The special follows Morgan’s 2023 set, Leanne Morgan: I’m Every Woman, which became one of Netflix’s more popular family-friendly comedy specials and remains available on the platform.

Netflix did not immediately provide a premiere date for Season 2 or a production timeline. Representatives for the streamer and the series did not immediately respond to requests for further comment. The show’s return marks another collaboration between Morgan and Lorre and reflects Netflix’s continued investment in star-driven sitcoms and comedy specials.
