The new Netflix K-drama "Spooky In Love" attempts to weave a romantic narrative between a hotel CEO with the ability to see ghosts and a prosecutor who enlists her help in murder cases. However, the series' initial episodes have been met with criticism for their contrived plot points and a romance that feels unearned.

The drama centers on Cheon Yeo-ri, the granddaughter of the Reina Hotel & Resort Group chairwoman and CEO of its flagship hotel. Yeo-ri possesses the unique ability to communicate with spirits, a gift that has led to a lonely existence, as touching others with her bare hands is said to curse them. This has caused past relationships to end, forcing her to wear gloves and maintain emotional distance.

Her path crosses with prosecutor Ma Kang-uk when they both investigate a murder case that leads them to the same remote location. Yeo-ri's ability to find a hidden body, guided by the victim's ghost, surprises Kang-uk, especially when police mistake their scuffle for something else. Their encounters continue, with Yeo-ri using her spectral informants to help Kang-uk, including in a high-profile case involving a professional golfer accused of murdering his girlfriend.

Critics note that while K-dramas often rely on coincidental meetings, "Spooky In Love" stretches credibility with its characters' frequent, seemingly orchestrated run-ins. The instant romantic connection between Yeo-ri and Kang-uk, sparked by a mere glance, is also seen as underdeveloped.

Despite the narrative criticisms, Park Eun-bin's performance as Yeo-ri has been highlighted as a strong point. She is praised for her portrayal of a character who can be both an intimidating CEO and capable of wielding a baseball bat. Ye Soo-jung also receives mention for her role as the imposing Chairwoman Baek Gyeong-ja.

The series is based on the 2011 South Korean film "Spellbound." "Spooky In Love" is available for streaming on Netflix.
