Matthew McConaughey has provided an update on the ongoing speculation surrounding a potential "Yellowstone" spin-off series. Speaking with Fox News Digital, the actor indicated that discussions with series creator Taylor Sheridan are continuing, though he stressed that "nothing's real yet."
Rumors of McConaughey's involvement in a "Yellowstone" spin-off first surfaced in 2023. At the time, Sheridan was reportedly exploring options for concluding the flagship series, particularly regarding the involvement of its star, Kevin Costner. Sheridan himself commented in June 2023 that McConaughey "seems like a natural fit" for the expanding "Yellowstone" universe.
McConaughey confirmed that he and Sheridan have had "conversations over the years" and have "spitballed a few ideas." He also mentioned that after watching "Yellowstone" drew him in, he expressed interest in participating in a project exploring a "raw world clashing up against the modern world."
The original "Yellowstone" series concluded in December 2024 without Kevin Costner, whose character, John Dutton, was given an off-screen death. In August 2024, it was announced that Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, who portray Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton respectively, would star in their own spin-off titled "Dutton Ranch." This series, set to follow the characters as they leave Montana for Texas, sees Sheridan stepping away from the writers' room for the first season, though he remains an executive producer.
Hauser has previously spoken about the challenges of working on "Dutton Ranch" without Sheridan's direct day-to-day involvement, noting the need for the cast and new writers to "figure on our feet how to really perform and tell a story." He expressed pride in what the team accomplished. Mccconaughey's update suggests that while a concrete project has not yet materialized, the possibility of his collaboration with Sheridan within the "Yellowstone" world remains open.
