Comedian and actor Matt Lucas has revealed he is autistic, sharing his diagnosis publicly for the first time this week.

Lucas, 52, disclosed his diagnosis during an appearance on BBC Radio 2's Romesh Ranganathan show. He explained that he manages his neurodivergent needs by balancing periods of intense social engagement, such as in the theater, with times of solitude for writing and personal rest.

"I enjoy periods of being very sociable, like you are in the theatre, and then I also enjoy those periods of solitude where I can just write on my own," Lucas said. He described his days off from performing, which typically occur six days a week, as opportunities to "not see people and give them a break from me" while he recharges.

He also humorously noted that he doesn't mind being ill, as it provides an enforced period of solitude. "I think, 'Oh lovely I am ill. I don't have to see anybody.' But just to have that recharge time is quite important to me," he admitted.

The actor is preparing to take on the role of Fagin in "Oliver!" on London's West End, a commitment that begins this October. This upcoming role follows a recent public appearance on "The One Show," where his new look, including a beard, surprised some fans.

Lucas explained the beard was grown in preparation for his role as Fagin. He also discussed his lifelong battle with alopecia, which began after a car accident at age six resulted in him losing all his hair. He has previously written about how this experience shaped his childhood and career.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects social, emotional, and communication skills, typically developing before the age of three and lasting throughout a person's life. Individuals with autism may experience differences in sensory reactions, adapt to changes in routine, communicate their needs, express feelings, and relate to others. Some may prefer solitude and avoid eye contact.

Matt's latest interview comes after the star shocked fans when he appeared on The One Show last month looking worlds away from his Little Britain days a with new look and 'bizarre beard'
