Actor Luke Evans has shared a heartfelt letter he wrote to Tim Curry just weeks before the acclaimed British actor died at age 80. Evans, who recently made his Broadway debut as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in "The Rocky Horror Show," posted the text of the letter on Instagram following news of Curry's passing.

Curry originated the role of the cross-dressing mad scientist in the 1973 London production of "The Rocky Horror Show" and reprised it in the iconic 1975 film adaptation, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Evans, who earned a Tony Award nomination for his portrayal of the same character on Broadway, described Curry as "a bright fierce flame" and "an inspiration to me and so many more people."

"Being compared to you has been one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever received, even though it’s a comparison no one could ever hope to live up to," Evans wrote in the letter. "There is, and always will be, only one Tim Curry."

Evans thanked Curry for his "fearless performance" and for creating a character that has endured for decades. He added, "For inspiring generations of actors to be a little braver than they thought they could be." Evans concluded the letter by expressing hope that Curry would approve of his own performance, writing, "I hope, wherever you are, you’d approve of one more Frank having the time of his life in those heels."

Curry, also known for his roles in "Annie," "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," and the miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's "It," died Tuesday night in Los Angeles. While a cause of death was not immediately confirmed, the actor had previously spoken about health issues, including a 2012 stroke that affected his mobility.

Reflecting on the enduring legacy of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at a 50th anniversary screening last year, Curry noted the film's significance within the LGBTQ+ community. He stated that the film's message, "don't dream it, be it," was very important, and that the movie gave people "permission to behave as badly as they really want." He expressed pride in that aspect of the film's impact.

Luke Evans made his Broadway debut in a new production of “The Rocky Horror Show” this spring, and received a Tony Award nomination for his portrayal of Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
