The infamous case of Lorena Bobbitt, who in 1993 severed her husband's penis, is being adapted into a new miniseries for Hulu. The series, titled 'Good American Family,' will explore the events surrounding the incident and the subsequent trials.
Lorena Bobbitt made international headlines in June 1993 when she attacked her husband, John Bobbitt, with a knife. She later claimed she acted in self-defense, alleging years of rape and abuse. John Bobbitt denied these claims. The severed penis was recovered and surgically reattached.
Lorena Bobbitt was charged with malicious wounding but was found not guilty by reason of insanity. She spent 45 days in a psychiatric facility. John Bobbitt was tried for marital sexual assault and acquitted of rape by a jury in November 1993. The couple finalized their divorce in 1995.
The new Hulu series is being executive produced by actress Ellen Pompeo, known for her role in 'Grey's Anatomy.' According to Variety, the anthology limited series is 'inspired by the ripped-from-the-headlines story of Lorena and John Bobbitt, a Virginia couple who incited a media circus that treated trauma as entertainment, launched a thousand dirty jokes, and ignited a gender war.'
This is not the first time the story has been revisited. Lorena Bobbitt, who now goes by her birth name Gallo, shared her account in Amazon Prime Video's 2019 docuseries 'Lorena.' The 2020 Lifetime movie 'I Was Lorena Bobbitt' also recounted the incident and subsequent trials, with Lorena herself narrating.
John Bobbitt later starred in two adult films and, at 59, resides in Florida. Lorena Gallo, 57, founded the Lorena Gallo Foundation in 2018, which aims to improve outcomes for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault through prevention education and emergency resources. She lives in Washington, D.C. with her partner and daughter.
