Liam Hemsworth has formally assumed the role of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s fantasy series The Witcher, which will return for an eight‑episode fourth season on Oct. 30. Netflix released a first look at Season 4 on Monday that introduces Hemsworth in the title role previously played by Henry Cavill.
The new teaser depicts Hemsworth’s Geralt confronting a ghostly wraith and offers a logline that sets the season against the fallout of a continent‑altering conflict. "After the Continent‑altering events of Season 3, Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri find themselves separated by a raging war and countless enemies," the synopsis reads. "As their paths diverge, and their goals sharpen, they stumble on unexpected allies eager to join their journeys. And if they can accept these found families, they just might have a chance at reuniting for good."
Henry Cavill, who led the series as the White Wolf for the first three seasons, announced in October 2022 that he would step away from the role. "My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4," Cavill wrote on Instagram at the time. He added that Hemsworth would "be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf."
Season 4 reunites returning cast members Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Princess Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier. The season also adds new faces to the ensemble, most notably Laurence Fishburne in the role of Regis. Other principal cast members include Eamon Farren, Anna Shaffer, Mimî M Khayisa, Cassie Clare, Mahesh Jadu, Meng’er Zhang, Graham McTavish and Royce Pierreson, among others.
Creator, showrunner and executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich described Season 4 as "the beginning of a two‑season journey" toward reuniting the series' central characters. Netflix has said the series will conclude after a fifth and final season; the streamer confirmed that Seasons 4 and 5 will be shot back‑to‑back to adapt the remaining novels in Andrzej Sapkowski’s saga, including Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and Lady of the Lake.
The Witcher debuted on Netflix in 2019 and has been adapted from Sapkowski’s books and short stories. The series blends sword‑and‑sorcery action with political intrigue across its multiple storylines; Season 4’s logline signals a tighter focus on the fractured relationships among Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri as a wider war reshapes alliances on the Continent.
The Witcher Season 4 premieres Oct. 30 on Netflix.
