Lewis Capaldi, performing at BST Hyde Park, jokingly implored his audience to remain for his entire set, referencing the ongoing England football match. The Scottish artist, 29, who is headlining two shows at the festival, expressed concern that fans might depart his concert to watch England play Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals.
"Thank you for being here! Although I know a lot of you might leave when the England game comes on," Capaldi said to the crowd. He added, "Let's not get into it. I'm Scottish, most of you guys are English. Can't we all live in peace and harmony? It's coming home," he remarked with a smile. Capaldi emphasized the significance of their attendance, stating, "But it's f****** special that you're here, I appreciate you being here when you could be anywhere else." He continued his plea, "Even if you do go to the pub early... I mean, stay please, as many of you stay until the end as possible."
Earlier in the week, Capaldi reportedly spent approximately £2,000 on drinks for patrons at The Marlborough pub in Mayfair after England's victory over Mexico. A pubgoer told The Sun that Capaldi, who was present with friends, "put a generous amount behind the bar" for customers. "When the final whistle went and England won, Lewis bought every single punter in the Marlborough a drink," the source stated. "Bar staff were instructed to charge all the drinks ordered to him. The tab was almost £2,000 in the end. It was a massive treat and a real lovely gesture, especially from a Scotland fan."
Singer Rita Ora, 35, was also reportedly present during the celebration and shared videos on her Instagram Stories. The clips showed them singing along to songs, including "It's Coming Home." One video posted by Ora at 2:26 a.m. indicated the festivities were continuing late into the night. Ora later shared a post about the experience, noting her hangover and jokingly commenting on her unchanged hairstyle, "NOTHING beats a London pub game EVER…. It’s coming home!!! The fact I woke up with my hair clips still in and my hair has not moved says it all."
Capaldi is scheduled for another headline performance at BST Hyde Park, an event sponsored by Peroni. Representatives for Lewis Capaldi were contacted for comment.
