Kim Kardashian has addressed the harsh critical reception of her Hulu legal drama "All's Fair," acknowledging that the show has evolved into a "full comedy" in response to audience feedback. The series, which stars Kardashian alongside veteran actresses like BetsyCloseOperation and Sarah Paulson, was met with widespread criticism following its debut, with The Hollywood Reporter describing her performance as "wooden" and The Times labeling the show "the worst TV drama ever."
Despite the negative reviews, "All's Fair" became the Hulu network's most-watched scripted series debut in three years and was promptly renewed. Kardashian, who also serves as a producer on the show, credits the writing team for their ability to adapt to pop culture's response. "The beauty in producing a show with writers that are really tuned in to pop culture is they can see what the response is and write accordingly to that," she said.
Kardashian, who has been in the public eye for over two decades, stated that her ability to handle criticism stems from a strong sense of mental health and a practice of "brushing off" detractors. "What is the alternative, right?" she questioned. "Do you just fall in and feel that, or keep your head down and try better, try harder and try a different path?" She added that she takes on challenging projects because she genuinely wants to learn.
Co-star Naomi Watts, who also produces the series, indicated that the upcoming second season will lean further into the "high fashion, high drama and heightened reality" that resonated with audiences. Watts also commented on Kardashian's acting, noting she is on a "trajectory" and "stepping up in the second season," even improvising and riffing in ways Watts found impressive. Kardashian humorously attributed this to her natural comedic talent.
One aspect of "All's Fair" that Kardashian "loves" is its portrayal of professional women who are both feminine and successful, which she sees as a realistic depiction of many women she knows. "It doesn't mean that just because you're super smart that you can't be fashionable and into glamorous things as well," she explained.
In other personal pursuits, Kardashian recently revealed she failed the exam to become a lawyer, an endeavor she had been studying for over six years through an apprenticeship. She plans to retake the exam. "If I don't pass something, if I don't do the best at something, then I'll get there," she said, emphasizing her determination. Following past public comments about using AI for legal advice, she intends to be more private about her future studies until she achieves her qualification.
