Katy Perry's concert film, documenting her "Lifetimes" tour, generated only £21,000 during its limited release in UK cinemas. The film, which reportedly cost £4 million to produce and was shot over two nights in Paris, failed to draw significant crowds, with some screenings playing to nearly empty auditoriums.
Around 150 cinemas and IMAX theaters across the UK hosted showings of the film. In one instance in Leeds, no tickets were sold, and a screening in Coventry saw only two attendees. A wildlife documentary, "Super Nature," released concurrently, sold nearly twice as many tickets.
An insider cited in the reporting suggested the film's performance was "incredibly poor" and indicated that the takings would not recoup the production costs. While box office figures for the United States have not been released, the film took £844 in New Zealand and £3,717 in Colombia.
In contrast, Taylor Swift's 2023 concert film, "The Eras Tour," achieved a global box office total of £198 million, including £12 million in the UK, becoming the highest-grossing concert film of all time.
Perry's "Lifetimes" tour itself was a commercial success, selling over a million tickets across 91 dates worldwide. However, the accompanying film did not replicate this success. Specific figures from UK screenings included an IMAX showing in Milton Keynes with 17 attendees, and another with ten. Edinburgh saw 17 ticket sales across two screenings. Even a flagship Vue cinema in London's Leicester Square sold 42 tickets out of 201, earning £881.58.
The film's performance marks a notable downturn for Perry, who previously held a record with her 2010 album "Teenage Dream" for scoring five US No. 1 singles from a single album. Her latest album, "143," released in 2024, received critical reviews. Her dancing during the "Lifetimes" tour also drew attention, with some online comparisons to a school talent show. Perry, 41, also participated in a Blue Origin space flight last year.
