K-pop artist Evan, previously known as Heeseung of the boyband ENHYPEN, has revealed details of his childhood battle with cancer. The 24-year-old singer discussed the severe symptoms he experienced before his diagnosis and the emotional toll of his treatment in an interview with Weverse Magazine.

Evan was in fourth grade when he began experiencing persistent coughing, which he initially dismissed as a common cold. The symptoms intensified when, during a soccer game, he found himself unable to breathe after only a few steps. A subsequent hospital visit revealed the cause: cancer. Evan was diagnosed with malignant lymphoma, a cancer that affects the lymphatic system's white blood cells.

The treatment process was challenging, but Evan found motivation in his mother's constant care. "I wanted to put on a brave face for her," he shared, referring to his mother, Lee Hee-seung. During his time in the hospital, he participated in patient talent shows, playing guitar and hosting events, while harboring his long-held dream of becoming a singer.

Evan also spoke about the profound impact of witnessing fellow patients lose their lives. "I'd watch my friends pass away and kept thinking, 'I want to live so badly, I want to go home.' Thankfully I made it through treatment and got to go on with my life," he recounted.

Upon returning to school after treatment, Evan faced social challenges. He noted that his energy levels were lower, and the regrowth of hair after chemotherapy led to him being teased. These experiences contributed to him becoming more introverted. He admitted that he had not previously discussed his cancer battle since becoming a public figure, as revisiting the memories was painful.

Evan has since channeled his experiences into his music. The lead single "Death of Me" contains lyrics such as "this ain't the death of me," which he stated come from his own brush with mortality. He explained that these lines reflect his repeated feeling that "it was never really the end," no matter how difficult the circumstances.

Evan was a member of ENHYPEN from 2020 to 2026 before departing the group earlier this year. He made his solo debut in March and later released the single "Ride or Die."
