Jonathan Bailey has announced his withdrawal from the West End production of "Sunday in the Park With George," following the earlier decision by his close friend, Ariana Grande, to step back from the show. Bailey cited his unwavering support for Grande as the reason for his departure.

Grande, who was set to star opposite Bailey in the musical, confirmed last month that she would be taking a break from public-facing work after completing her "Eternal Sunshine" tour. Her final London performance is scheduled for September 1.

"Ari is one of my dearest friends, and my support for her is unwavering," Bailey stated on Instagram. "After much consideration, I have decided to step back from Sunday in the Park with George. This brilliant, introspective musical has been a real passion project for me, and I feel incredibly lucky to have shared in its journey with this team."

The producers of "Sunday in the Park With George," Empire Street Productions, confirmed Grande's withdrawal and stated that the production will proceed as planned, with casting to be announced in due course. The musical is scheduled to open at the Barbican Centre in summer 2027.

Bailey and Grande, who are known to be close friends and previously starred together in the film "Wicked," were slated to play the lead roles of George and Dot, respectively. "I wish the very best to the entire company, I will be cheering them on as they continue with this production," Bailey added.

Grande's representative stated that her decision to step back from public appearances was planned well in advance and is not a reaction to negativity. The singer herself has expressed that while setting boundaries is important, her tour has been a positive and healing experience. She emphasized that multiple things can be true simultaneously, including the need for breaks and the continuation of a fulfilling professional life.
