Johnny Depp is reportedly in discussions for a potential return to the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, with director Jerry Bruckheimer confirming talks for a sixth film. The role could bring in over $22.5 million for the actor, who previously stated he would not reprise his iconic Captain Jack Sparrow character.

Depp's career faced significant challenges following his highly publicized legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard. While he won a defamation trial against Heard in the U.S. in 2022, the fallout led to the end of his association with Disney for the "Pirates" franchise and a departure from the "Fantastic Beasts" film series. His net worth, once estimated at $900 million, is now reportedly closer to $149 million.

Despite past declarations, Bruckheimer told Deadline that discussions are underway, stating, "We're talking with Johnny, we're working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done." The franchise has been a major financial success, grossing $4.5 billion at the box office across its five installments, with Depp earning an estimated $300 million from his appearances.

Following the legal disputes, Depp has been working on a comeback, appearing in smaller independent films such as "Waiting for the Barbarians." He also starred in the 2023 French film "Jeanne du Barry" and "Modi," which saw him attend the Cannes Film Festival. He has also maintained a lucrative fragrance campaign with Dior, renegotiating his contract for upwards of $20 million.

Depp has also taken on new acting roles, including a part as Ebenezer Scrooge in the upcoming adaptation of "A Christmas Carol," directed by Ti West. The cast also includes Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, and Ian McKellen. Additionally, he is set to appear in the action thriller "Day Drinker," scheduled for release in 2027, alongside Penelope Cruz and Madelyn Cline.

In 2020, Depp lost a libel action in the UK High Court after being labeled a "a wife beater." However, he successfully brought a defamation lawsuit against Heard in a U.S. court in 2022. The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages, while Heard was awarded $2 million on one of her counterclaims.
