Hundreds of fans were left waiting for five hours outside Yankee Stadium on Sunday night due to a security breach that forced a temporary stadium lockdown. The chaos occurred before Jay-Z's concert, leading to significant delays and widespread fan frustration.
The incident began when a large group of individuals without tickets rushed at least two stadium gates, bypassing security screening. This prompted a full lockdown, preventing anyone from entering or exiting the venue for an extended period.
Jay-Z, 56, eventually took the stage and apologized for the delay, explaining the situation to the audience. "I appreciate your patience. We gonna have a good time. I got some s**t for you, I promise you. There was like ten thousand people outside and they closed all the doors cuz [people] rushed the door and I didn’t want to start music and have people get trampled," he stated, adding, "I’m really sorry for the inconvenience."
Social media accounts from attendees reflected the frustration. Many expressed disbelief at the security lapse and the prolonged wait. Some posts indicated that people were experiencing distress, with reports of fainting and people asking for medical attention.
Celebrities, including Fabolous, Charlamagne, and A$AP Rocky, were also reportedly among those stuck outside waiting to enter the venue. Videos shared online showed people running through the doors, with one individual being wheeled out on a stretcher.
The New York Yankees, Roc Nation, and Live Nation released a joint statement addressing the incident. They confirmed that "hundreds of individuals in large groups — who did not have tickets to tonight’s performance — stormed over peaceful ticketholders, and in some cases, breached security." The statement noted that all gates were closed for an extended period as a result, and re-opened cautiously with the guidance of the NYPD to ensure attendee safety. They expressed gratitude to the NYPD and stadium security for their efforts.
The concert, part of a series at Yankee Stadium, was the finale in the Bronx. The disruption led to concerns about safety and organization, with fans questioning how such a breach could occur.
