Jamie Lee Curtis has offered further explanation regarding her previous comments about finding the filming experience for the sitcom "New Girl" to be "awful." Curtis stated that her difficulties stemmed from the production method, not from the show itself or the people involved.
"It’s a great show, ‘New Girl.’ Very funny, but doing it is just like doing a movie,” Curtis said at NBCUniversal’s Summer Backlot Experience. “You know, you’ve got a camera crew, and nobody laughs. It’s silent and it’s awful. For me ― awful. Single-camera comedies, for me, not fun.”
Curtis addressed her remarks in an Instagram post following their viral spread. She emphasized that more significant global issues, such as natural disasters and political conflicts, warrant greater attention than a casual comment made during a press event promoting her new show, "Newlyweds."
She explained that her comments were a comparison between her current project, a multi-camera sitcom developed with Gail Lerner about later-life romance, and "New Girl." Curtis noted the enjoyment she and her co-stars are experiencing with "Newlyweds," which has been well-received by audiences.
Curtis elaborated that her preference is for performing live in front of a studio audience, describing it as akin to staging a play with immediate audience reactions. She contrasted this with single-camera comedies like "New Girl," where the absence of live feedback creates a comedic process in a "vacuum."
Despite her reservations about the filming process for "New Girl," Curtis reiterated her appreciation for the show and its cast and crew. "I said it wasn’t my favorite experience although the show itself is fantastic and the team that made it are talented and that Zooey Deschanel is an absolute gem of a human and said I got to play with my friend, Rob Reiner, as exes and that was sweet and lovely,” she stated.
Curtis concluded by urging the public to move past the discussion, directing attention towards more pressing matters. "I asked readers to 'not waste clicks and comments and just move on to WAY more important things. That will be all."
