ITV has reportedly canceled its high-budget reality competition series, "The Summit," after only one season. The decision follows disappointing ratings for the show, which featured 14 contestants attempting to climb a mountain for a £200,000 prize.
Launched in February, "The Summit," hosted by Ben Shephard, struggled to attract a significant audience, with its finale drawing only 1.2 million viewers. Industry insiders suggest that the show failed to capture the public's interest, despite attempts to emulate the success of formats like "The Traitors." "Competition is fierce out there right now, and even shows with big budgets and big-name presenters are not a guarantee of success," one source told The Sun. "Unless they make an impact, quite quickly execs have to weigh up whether the cost of making these shows is worth the ratings, and therefore the advertising revenues, to make it worthwhile."
This reported cancellation adds to a period of upheaval for ITV's reality programming. Reports also suggest that "Celebrity Big Brother" may be axed, with tentative plans to move it to ITV2 in 2027 now reportedly shelved. A significant challenge for "Celebrity Big Brother" is said to be securing high-profile celebrities, many of whom are reportedly prioritizing appearances on "The Celebrity Traitors."
Further shake-ups are rumored for "The Voice UK," with reports that coaches Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher of McFly are unlikely to return. The pair cited significant commitments, including ongoing work on new music and a West End musical adaptation, as reasons for their potential departure. The 14th series of "The Voice UK" has already faced delays, with filming for the audition stages occurring in 2024.
These programming shifts come as ITV aims to secure its future schedule, with "I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!" and its spin-off also requiring new casts. While an ITV spokesperson confirmed that "Big Brother" will return to ITVX and ITV2 later this year, no definitive decisions have been made regarding the 2027 schedule for "Celebrity Big Brother."
