In the months leading up to her death, actress Hayden Panettiere and her mother, Lesley Vogel, had a strained relationship marked by public criticism and a decision by Vogel to cease contact. Panettiere, 36, was found unresponsive at her on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson's home in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday afternoon. An acquaintance called 911, reporting cardiac arrest and a possible overdose. Panettiere was pronounced dead less than 40 minutes later.

Just two months prior to her death, Vogel, 70, publicly commented on her relationship with her daughter, then promoting her memoir. "After 20 years of trauma, I took the advice of professionals and chose the no-contact route," Vogel stated. "As many parents of entertainment children [know], we are all too familiar with the painful observation of watching the self-destructive paths they sometimes choose. Sadly, this is out of our control. You cannot save someone who does not want to be saved."

Panettiere's memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," detailed her struggles with alcoholism, postnatal depression, familial trauma, and her decision to give custody of her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, to her ex-fiancé, Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko. The book also delved into Panettiere's fractured relationship with her mother, a former soap opera actress. Panettiere alleged that her mother's management of her career from a young age contributed to her personal demons.

According to a source close to Panettiere who spoke to the Daily Mail in May, the estrangement from her mother was "worse than anyone knows," with their relationship reportedly deteriorating over the previous two years. Panettiere, who began working at eight months old, was managed by Vogel into superstardom. She claimed her mother was harsh and critical from a very young age, recounting an incident where her mother's reaction to a failed audition was severe. Panettiere also alleged that her mother placed immense pressure on her, grooming her to be a "little soldier" and that her earnings as a child star were used to support the family financially.

"I became the confidante and the assistant and the therapist and the shoulder to cry on and everything but her child," Panettiere said in a podcast interview. "I desperately wanted to still feel like I had parents to lean on."

Panettiere ended her professional relationship with her mother at age 19 while acting on "Heroes," asking her to just be her mom. Vogel's alleged response, Panettiere recalled, was "You owe me." Vogel, in turn, had previously pushed back against Panettiere's claims, suggesting the resurfacing of their drama was an attempt to "sell books."

The actress's untimely death is another tragedy for her parents, Lesley Vogel and Alan "Skip" Panettiere, who divorced in 2016. They previously lost their 28-year-old son, Jansen Panettiere, in 2023 due to a heart condition. Panettiere's father confirmed the news of his daughter's death in a statement.

Despite the difficulties, Panettiere expressed in a recent interview that she maintained an open door for future reconciliation with her mother. "Unfortunately, we don't have a relationship right now," she said, "But that doesn't mean that I don't leave the door open for the opportunity to present itself one day."
