Gary Busey was sentenced Thursday to two years of probation after pleading guilty to one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact for an incident at Monster-Mania Con, a horror-themed fan convention held in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, in August 2022. The Camden County court also barred the 81-year-old actor from having any contact with the victim and allowed him to seek a transfer of probation to California, if approved. He has 45 days to appeal the ruling, and his attorney said he was pleased with the potential for the sentence to be transferred so he could continue life in California.
Prosecutors said Busey grabbed the buttocks of two women and attempted to unhook another woman's bra during a photo shoot at the convention. They described the incident as not an accidental touch and said the actor asked one of the women where she obtained her clothing. The defense had urged the judge to impose fines only, citing Busey's advanced age, health issues, and permanent residence in California, but Judge Gwendolyn Blue rejected that request, citing the gravity of the offense and Busey's prior interactions with the criminal justice system.
During the hearing, conducted with Busey appearing remotely from his home in California, he acknowledged that the act was not accidental. The proceedings reflected a rapid shift in the case: after denying wrongdoing at the outset and telling a celebrity-news outlet that "nothing happened", Busey pleaded not guilty at an arraignment in March 2025. In July, he reversed course and pleaded guilty to the single charge of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, with his attorney Blair Zwillman stating the plea related to "touching the buttocks of a female over the clothing." Judge Blue noted the seriousness of the offense before imposing the probation term and the no-contact order.
The case marks a notable legal turn for a performer whose career has spanned decades. Busey rose to fame with an Oscar-nominated performance as Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story (1978) and later appeared in films such as Lethal Weapon and Predator 2. He has publicly discussed his traumatic 1988 brain injury from a motorcycle crash and his ongoing battles with substance abuse, including appearances on the reality series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew in 2008. More recently, he played God in the 2019 Off-Broadway musical Only Human.
The Monster-Mania Con incident remains a focal point of ongoing conversations about veteran actors and accountability in public appearances at fan events. The resolution of Busey's case—two years of probation, plus a no-contact order—will set a benchmark for how similar incidents are adjudicated at conventions that host aging celebrities alongside fans seeking memorabilia and encounters. As the probation unfolds, Busey and his team can pursue a transfer to California, a process that would allow continued oversight outside New Jersey, subject to court approval.
