The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended invitations to 529 new members, a move that will bring the total Oscar voting body to 10,338 members if all recipients accept. This marks a significant expansion, nearly doubling the academy's membership from approximately 6,000 in 2016.

The new class includes prominent figures such as Jenna Ortega, Jacob Elordi, Teyana Taylor, Josh O'Connor, Simu Liu, and the filmmaking duo of Josh and Benny Safdie. Other notable invitees include Anthony Ramos, Bill Skarsgård, Mia Goth, Jon Bernthal, Jemaine Clement, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, and Stephen Fry.

This expansion is part of the academy's ongoing commitment to diversify its ranks. Historically, the academy has faced criticism for its lack of diversity. In 2015, the membership was 75% male and 92% white, coinciding with the #OscarsSoWhite movement. Following the induction of this latest group, the academy's projected membership will be 64% male and 75% white.

The new class itself reflects a push for greater representation, with 42% women, 56% from underrepresented communities, and 53% from countries outside the United States. The academy stated that membership selection is based on professional qualifications, with representation, inclusion, and equity remaining priorities.

In recent years, the academy has moderated its growth pace after adding classes closer to 1,000 members. Last year, 534 new voters were invited. Beyond membership, the academy has also expanded its awards categories, introducing a casting award earlier this year and planning to present an Oscar for stunt design achievement in 2028.

The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 14, 2027, with Conan O'Brien set to host for the third consecutive year.
