Fatboy Slim, whose birth name is Quentin Cook, has revealed that he grew up in an open-relationship household with two mothers and two fathers living together. The DJ, known for hits like "Praise You," shared this personal detail in an interview on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs.
Cook, who was previously married to broadcaster Zoe Ball, explained that his parents, Ronald Cook and Ros, decided to maintain their relationship for the sake of their children. "They wanted to stay together for us kids, but they didn't like each other any more," he said. "So one day they stopped rowing and just had other partners. They were in an open relationship, living in the same house."
He recounted that the family considered this arrangement normal until they spoke with others. "We thought it was normal. It was only when we talked to other people who said, 'Isn't that weird?'"
Cook also touched upon the origin of his birth name, Quentin, explaining it was a popular choice in the 1960s. He noted that the name was derived from the Latin word for fifth, as he was the fifth member of the family. He also mentioned that before Quentin Tarantino became widely known, the most prominent figure with that name was Quentin Crisp, an English writer and activist. "Being named the same name as him going through school was... I got a lot of flak," Cook stated.
He chose the stage name "Norman" for his music career, seeking a "really normal name." He also shared that he attended Reigate Grammar School alongside Sir Keir Starmer, the current leader of the country.
In the interview, Fatboy Slim also discussed his past struggles with alcohol addiction, which he used to manage stage fright. He revealed that he became teetotal 17 years prior, a decision influenced by a comment from his then-wife, Zoe Ball. "All she said was, 'Oh, Norman,' but she said it in such a way... it was my wake-up moment," he recalled.
He described his initial return to performing after getting sober as challenging, experiencing crippling stage fright for the first few shows. However, his confidence eventually returned during a gig in Japan.
Fatboy Slim, also known as Norman Cook, was born Quentin Cook. He and Zoe Ball were married and had two children before their divorce. The DJ's revelations were broadcast on Desert Island Discs on June 28, 2026.
