Hollywood actor Ewan McGregor has returned to his native Scotland with his family, seeking to reconnect with his roots and be closer to his parents. McGregor, who left Scotland in his late teens, now resides with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and their five-year-old son, Laurie, in a mansion near his hometown of Crieff, Perthshire.
The actor expressed his desire for Laurie to experience the same idyllic childhood he had growing up in Scotland. "I’ve got my little boy, who’s five, and he’s going to grow up there in much the same way that I did, which is nice," McGregor said. He also noted with pleasure that his son is beginning to adopt a Scottish accent. "The accent is not quite there yet but with anything that’s happening at school, like when he counts, he gets a wee bit Scottish," he added.
McGregor's decision to move back was influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, during which he was separated from his elderly parents and brother for two years. Speaking at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, he recalled the isolation and the realization of what he had been missing. "There was something about seeing my parents two years older and not having seen them other than on a phone," he stated. He described the ease of being able to visit his parents, something he hadn't experienced as an adult. "I left home at 16 and I have always lived away from where my parents are... I was really missing something all these years, but now I can jump on my bike and I’ll be at my mum and dad’s house in half an hour."
The property McGregor and Winstead purchased is a 10-bedroom, Category C-listed estate that reportedly cost £2.35 million. It includes a gate lodge, outbuildings, and over 15,000 square feet of living space across three floors, with an additional two-bedroom flat.
In addition to his personal move, McGregor is set to star in a new play alongside Alan Cumming at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre. The production, an adaptation of the film "Supernova," will feature the actors portraying a gay couple dealing with a dementia diagnosis. The play is scheduled to run from July 24 to August 21.
