Actress Ellie Bamber has been spotted filming scenes for a new movie in East London that chronicles one of football's most unusual true stories. The film, titled "Half Time Hero," will tell the story of Steve Davies, a dedicated West Ham supporter who famously went from the terraces to the pitch to score for his beloved club.
Bamber, 29, was seen on set alongside actor Anson Boon, 26, who portrays Davies. The actress, dressed in casual attire including a floral-print top and Doc Marten boots, was photographed with Boon, who draped a West Ham scarf around her shoulders. Bamber was recently seen attending Wimbledon, appearing in polished chic, a contrast to her current filming location.
The remarkable events that form the basis of "Half Time Hero" took place during a pre-season friendly match in 1994. Davies, then 27 and working as a courier, was in attendance at Upton Park. During the first half, he reportedly directed a stream of abuse at striker Lee Chapman from the stands near the West Ham dugout. This persistent critique caught the attention of the club's then-assistant manager, Harry Redknapp.
According to accounts, Redknapp made an unconventional offer to Davies, suggesting he take Chapman's place on the field during halftime. Davies accepted the challenge and subsequently scored a goal in West Ham's 4-0 victory. Redknapp later described Davies as a "tattooed skinhead" who was critical of Chapman's performance. He recalled the moment, stating he asked Davies, "Can you play as good as you talk?" and informed him he would get the chance to play for West Ham.
Davies himself has described the experience as the "greatest moment in my life." He also admitted to having consumed cigarettes and beer during the first half of the match prior to his unexpected appearance on the pitch. The film aims to bring this unique chapter of football history to the screen.
Bamber, who previously portrayed Kate Moss in "Moss & Freud," has been dating Danish actor Oliver Overgaard Reichhardt for a year. She was seen with Reichhardt at Wimbledon earlier this month.
