Ego Nwodim announced she is leaving Saturday Night Live after seven seasons, posting an emotional farewell on Instagram Friday as the show prepares for its 51st season.

In her post, the 37-year-old comedian wrote, “the hardest part of a great party is knowing when to say goodnight. But after seven unforgettable seasons, I have decided to leave ‘SNL.’” She thanked longtime showrunner Lorne Michaels, 80, “for the opportunity,” and expressed gratitude to the cast, crew and writers “for their brilliance, support, and friendship.” She added, “Week after week on that stage taught me more than I could have ever imagined, and I will carry those memories (and that laughter) with me always.” After a praying hands and kiss emoji, she signed off, “now invite me to your weddings please!”

Nwodim’s announcement came amid broader cast changes as the long-running sketch show readies new episodes. Fellow comedian Amber Ruffin left a congratulatory comment on Nwodim’s post: “Congratulations! As long as I can still watch you perform, I’m good.”

Nwodim joined the SNL ensemble and became known for recurring characters and impressions that contributed to the show’s comedic mix over seven seasons. In her message she singled out the creative team and colleagues who helped shape her tenure on the program.

Lorne Michaels, who has overseen Saturday Night Live for decades, has guided multiple cast transitions during the show’s run as it balances veteran performers with new talent. Season 51 will mark another cycle of casting and creative shifts for the late-night sketch series.

Nwodim did not outline specific future projects in the Instagram post. Her departure removes a familiar face from the SNL lineup and continues a pattern of turnover that typically precedes a new season. The show’s producers and representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Fans and industry observers often view summer and early fall departures as opportunities for performers to pursue television, film and live comedy work outside the SNL platform. Nwodim’s post framed her exit as a personal choice and a grateful farewell, emphasizing the lessons and memories she said she will carry forward from her time on the show.
