"Dolly: A True Original Musical," a new Broadway production celebrating the life and career of country music icon Dolly Parton, is slated to open at the St. James Theatre on Monday, Dec. 7. The musical, which previously ran at Nashville’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, traces Parton's journey from her childhood in East Tennessee to her rise in the entertainment industry.
The show features a repertoire of Parton's well-known hits, including "I Will Always Love You," "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors," and "9 to 5," alongside new songs written by the artist. "My whole life has been a musical. A grand ole opera, really, and I can’t wait to bring it to you on Broadway. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I’ve enjoyed livin’ it!" Parton stated.
While the official Broadway cast has not yet been announced, the Nashville production featured Katie Rose Clarke, Carrie St. Louis, and Quinn Titcomb portraying Dolly Parton at different stages of her life. Other cast members from the Nashville run included John Behlmann as Carl Dean, John Zdrojeski as Porter Wagoner, and Jacob Fishel as Sandy Gallin. Clarke is known for her role as Glinda in the Broadway production of 'Wicked,' and St. Louis also portrayed Glinda in 'Wicked' on Broadway and its national touring company. Quinn Titcomb made her professional debut at age five in the national tour of 'Waitress.'
Parton herself has expressed anticipation for the show. Recalling a trip to New York in 1964 when she saw the musical "Hello, Dolly" and observed "Hello, Dolly" signs on taxis, she shared a long-held desire to see her name on a New York taxi again. She addressed the audience before a preview performance, encouraging them to enjoy the show as a Broadway musical rather than a "hootenanny."
