Daisy Edgar-Jones Finds Herself in Jane Austen's 'Sense and Sensibility'

Daisy Edgar-Jones, known for her breakout role in the hit series "Normal People," is stepping into the world of Jane Austen, portraying Elinor Dashwood in the latest adaptation of "Sense and Sensibility." In an interview with the BBC, Edgar-Jones revealed a strong personal connection to her character, admitting, "When it comes to love, I think I am very much more Elinor in every sort of way." She elaborated that she tends to "lead a lot with my head and try and push aside, bury my emotion." However, she also noted that her character's journey of embracing a "wilder, passionate side" resonated with her, stating, "And I feel like I learnt to do that too."

The new film, directed by Georgia Oakley, adheres to the period setting of Austen's 1811 novel, focusing on the Dashwood sisters' navigation of love, loss, and societal expectations after their father's death. Edgar-Jones defended the enduring appeal of Austen's stories, stating, "Her stories are something that fascinate us still today." She highlighted the universality of Austen's themes, noting that "She has an incredible way of articulating the female experience." The actress also pointed out that the "trials and tribulations of the two women as they navigate life, love and all that becomes as you grow up, definitely is so relatable to all generations."

Edgar-Jones stars alongside Esmé Creed-Miles, who plays the more emotionally driven sister, Marianne. The two actresses have a history, having previously worked together as teenagers on the 2018 film "Pond Life." Creed-Miles described their earlier collaboration as filled with "sleepovers every night and watch Love Island." For Edgar-Jones, the theme of sisterhood, central to "Sense and Sensibility," was particularly impactful, especially as she is an only child. "I've heard a lot of people say that after watching the film, it either makes them want a sister or to ring up their sister and say like, ‘Hey, I love you,’ and I think that's really special. It's the part of the film I'm most proud of."

Despite numerous adaptations of "Sense and Sensibility," including the acclaimed 1995 film, Edgar-Jones expressed enthusiasm for new interpretations. "The more the merrier, in my opinion," she said. She believes that Austen's ability to capture timeless human experiences, such as love, heartbreak, and interpersonal dynamics, ensures her work continues to resonate. Creed-Miles added that the film might offer comfort, stating, "I don't know if seeing a movie is going to fix everything, but it might make you feel a little bit less alone in some of the things you're feeling."

Edgar-Jones's own career trajectory saw a significant boost with "Normal People" during the pandemic. The series, based on Sally Rooney's novel, focused on the complex relationship between Marianne and Connell, played by Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal. The pair have maintained a close friendship. Edgar-Jones has since starred in "Twisters" and "Where The Crawdads Sing," while Mescal has appeared in "Gladiator II" and upcoming Beatles films. When asked about speculation that Mescal could be a candidate for the next James Bond, Edgar-Jones responded enthusiastically, "I don’t know, but I think there’s nothing Paul can’t do. So I would be there. Wow, that’s cool."

"Sense and Sensibility" is set for release in UK cinemas on September 25.
