Hilary Duff has recounted a "spicy" and "kind of evil" prank she orchestrated years ago with her best friend against a man who had mistreated her friend. The 39-year-old singer told Billboard in a recent cover story that the incident occurred in her late teens, before she had children.
Duff and her accomplice purchased "the cheapest, grossest can of wieners and tuna" and created a "rancid mix" which they then deposited on the ex-boyfriend's front lawn. "We were spicy and we went and bought the cheapest, grossest can of wieners and tuna and we just had a little field day on his front lawn," Duff recalled. She explained that the man had been "doing my friend real dirty," and the revenge plot was conceived while they were "hitting the bottle."
This anecdote comes several months after Duff was involved in a controversy surrounding an essay published by Ashley Tisdale. The essay, which appeared in The Cut, discussed the potential for mom groups to become "toxic" and described experiences of "mean-girl behavior" and exclusion. Tisdale alluded to a group of friends that included Duff, Mandy Moore, and Meghan Trainor.
Duff later expressed that she felt "really sad" and "taken aback" by Tisdale's essay, asserting that the claims were not accurate. Speaking on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast in February, Duff stated that while she has a core group of long-term friends, she also has multiple groups of mom friends due to having four children. She felt the essay was untrue and unfair to the women involved.
More recently, Duff shared photos on Instagram from a girls' trip to Mexico with Moore and other friends, which some fans interpreted as a subtle response to Tisdale's essay. The trip included a stay at the One&Only Mandarina resort in Riviera Nayarit.
