In the latest installment of "Criminal Minds: Evolution," Season 19, Episode 9, titled "Special Agent Garrity," the character Lance Kingston, portrayed by Connor Storrie, was killed off in a violent explosion. The event occurred as the season's antagonist, James Crowley, also known as The Fan, put a phase of his plan into motion.
Crowley had previously kidnapped Brian Garrity and his ex-partner Sheila, along with Laura Boyd. The FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) worked to identify The Fan, eventually using Lance's testimony to confirm Crowley's identity. While Crowley was initially released by the BAU under surveillance, Lance also managed to escape.
Crowley revealed his manipulation of Lance, stating that he had Laura's GPS location and would only provide it if Lance helped him. Lance, intending to rescue Laura, put down his weapon and took a phone containing the GPS information. However, as he prepared to leave, Crowley revealed his true intentions. He showed Lance security footage on a laptop, with a message appearing on the phone's screen reading "PATHETIC!" The phone then exploded, killing Lance.
Crowley explained his philosophy to his captives, referencing "main character syndrome" and the predetermined nature of outcomes in a larger game. He suggested that individuals often perceive themselves as the hero of their own story, but their roles are part of a greater, orchestrated plan.
Connor Storrie's portrayal of Lance Kingston marked a significant arc for the character. Introduced in Episode 4, Storrie's performance evolved from a manipulative individual to a character audiences could root for. Lance's initial role was expanded from a single episode to a four-episode arc due to the positive reception of Storrie's performance.
Despite Lance's death, Brian, Sheila, and Laura are confirmed to be alive. The episode concluded with the escape of Elias Voit, setting the stage for the upcoming season finale. New episodes of "Criminal Minds: Evolution" are released on Thursdays on Paramount+.
