The Stump, a 17th-century roadside inn located between Cirencester and Stow-on-the-Wold, has become a popular destination for its convivial atmosphere and affordability, contrasting with many of the more exclusive establishments in the Cotswolds. The pub, which offers pizzas and Negronis, is reportedly booked solid every night from April to October, with all ten rooms and every table consistently occupied.
Owned by childhood friends Baz and Fred (Harry Henriques and Fred Hicks), who previously gained recognition for their pizza ventures in London and management of the New Inn in Coln St Aldwyns, The Stump is a transformation of a former Arkell's pub. While maintaining the historic sloping tiled roof, the interior has been updated. Guests can choose from standard rooms, located in what were once the stables, or two cottage suites. Accommodations feature amenities such as free-standing tubs, walk-in showers, quality linens, and smart televisions. Prices for a cottage suite were reported at £230, with standard doubles starting from £150 per night.
The establishment caters to a diverse clientele, from locals celebrating birthdays to elderly couples, young families, and groups of friends. Dogs are also welcomed. Dining options include alfresco seating and indoor seating around three open fires during colder months. The menu features first courses starting at £6 and bottles of wine priced from £24, significantly lower than typically found in the area. The wood-fired pizzas are a particular highlight, with one reviewer noting the chorizo and nduja option, though questioning the addition of honey.
A takeaway pizza shack is also available on the roadside. Despite the pub's lively atmosphere, the morning after is described as manageable, without disruptive late-night music. The Stump's success suggests that hospitality businesses can thrive by offering value and a welcoming environment, even in sought-after locations.
