Chase Stokes, star of the Netflix series "Outer Banks," has revealed that he saved his co-star Madison Bailey from a frightening near-drowning incident while filming. The pair recounted the event in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Stokes, 33, explained that during a scene filmed in Barbados, Bailey, 27, was submerged in the water for an extended period. "I realized that I couldn’t see Bails’ face anymore," Stokes said, describing how he noticed Bailey had been underwater for a significant amount of time. He then jumped off the boat to assist her.

Bailey recalled that they had been treading water before the cameras rolled, and communication was difficult. "I was like, ‘Oh no, Bails has been under there for a while,'" Stokes remembered. He stated, "So I jumped off the boat and I realized that she was not able to breathe underwater." Bailey added that she "couldn’t swim closer to the boat," leading to a struggle.

Adding to the confusion, some crew members initially believed the crisis was part of the performance. "I was like, ‘No, she’s drowning,'" Stokes said. "I was like, ‘Hey that’s not acting.'" Bailey humorously recalled the situation, saying, "I was drowning. Everyone’s like, ‘Wow, she’s really good.'"

Stokes noted that "the underwater work" had been the most challenging aspect of filming for him across the show's five seasons. Bailey, however, described filming underwater as her "hardest" part of the series and acknowledged Stokes' strong swimming abilities, joking about his ease in the water compared to her struggles.

Stokes and Bailey play John B. and Kiara, respectively, on "Outer Banks." The show recently concluded its fifth and final season, which became available on Netflix on Thursday. The series follows a group of teenagers in North Carolina's Outer Banks.

Reflecting on the conclusion of filming, Stokes shared on Netflix's "Outer Banks" podcast that the final day on set felt surreal. "It just all came to a close as the sun was setting, in true typical ‘Outer Banks’ fashion," he said. "We were all just standing there with our arms around each other."

All five seasons of "Outer Banks" are currently streaming on Netflix.
