Celine Dion made an emotional return to the stage Saturday night in Paris, commencing a five-week residency and her first concert run since being diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS). The 58-year-old singer appeared visibly moved as she entered the La Plenitude Arena before an estimated 30,000 fans, marking a significant milestone in her battle with the rare neurological disorder.

SPS is characterized by severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms, and can also lead to an unsteady gait, double vision, or slurred speech. While there is no cure for the condition, treatments aim to manage symptoms and slow its progression. Dion had previously canceled the remainder of her Courage world tour in 2023 due to the illness and had only performed briefly on two occasions since announcing her diagnosis.

The concert marks the fulfillment of Dion's dream to perform for her fans again, achieved after months of a rigorous training regimen. Before taking the stage, she was greeted by fans outside her hotel. In a gesture of support, fans known as 'the red heads' set up a candy apple stand, referencing a past statement where they emphasized their concern for her well-being over her music career, stating, "We're not here for the apple, we're here for the tree."

Dion's rehabilitation plan has included new medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. To prepare for her performances, she has been engaged in 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week, complemented by twice-weekly ballet and barre classes. Her home gym is equipped with weights, a treadmill, and a reformer machine, contributing to an increase in her flexibility.

Speaking about her recovery, Dion described the process as a continuous cycle of falling and getting back up, expressing pride in achieving something her body was not "born to do." She prefers to view her condition as progressive rather than a "disease."

It marks her first run of concerts since she was forced to cancel the remainder of her Courage world tour in 2023 due to a debilitating battle with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS)

Dion was diagnosed with SPS in 2022, following a flare-up in 2020. She spent three years in isolation, partly due to concerns that fans might perceive her as living a full life while canceling shows. During this period, she developed a deep appreciation for nature, finding parallels between barren autumn trees and her own struggles.

The current residency is scheduled for 16 shows in Autumn 2026, with an additional 10 dates planned for May 2027. Tickets for her comeback announcement in March sold out instantly. Dion's last public performance was in Riyadh, and earlier in 2024, she sang at the Paris Olympics.
