Celine Dion performed her first full concert in more than six years on Saturday night, delivering a 25-song, two-hour-and-15-minute set at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, west of Paris. The performance marked a significant return for the Quebec superstar, who was diagnosed in 2022 with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder affecting muscles, including those of the throat.

Dion, 58, had not played a full concert since March 8, 2020. The diagnosis led her to cancel a world tour and step away from the public eye. The recent concert was the first night of an engagement designed to demonstrate her ability to perform again. This sold-out run is scheduled to include 16 shows over five weeks, with an additional 10 dates booked for May 2027, totaling 26 nights.

Stiff person syndrome affects one to two people in a million and can cause muscle stiffening and violent spasms triggered by noise, touch, or emotional stress. Performing in front of an arena of 30,000 people presented multiple potential triggers. Dion had previously described singing with the condition as feeling like being strangled.

During the concert, Dion acknowledged the challenge, stating, "I promised myself I wouldn’t cry." She reportedly missed a cue early in the show but continued, sharing with the audience, "I’ve learned to live with the fragility and made it my reason to keep going." The voice, while noted to have lost some of its highest range compared to the instrument that sold 250 million albums, still delivered notable performances of hits like "My Heart Will Go On" and "The Power of Love." She also performed Catalani's aria "Ebben? Ne andrò lontana."

The concert concluded with the encore performance of "All By Myself," a song that has long been a benchmark for her vocal ability. Hitting the high F and holding it, Dion shared a brief, relieved glance with her musical director before the audience's sustained applause. One concertgoer, Élodie Marchand, 42, described the moment: "When she hit that note, I grabbed my friend’s arm. I’d been holding my breath without realizing. Then I started crying. ‘She’s back. She’s really back.’"

Dion closed the show with two Jean-Jacques Goldman songs and a final message to the audience: "I love you, my loves. Take care of yourselves." The return to the stage came 2,379 days after her last full concert, with 25 more performances scheduled.
