Mexican singer-songwriter Carín León will make history on Sunday as the first artist to headline a concert at Inter Miami's newly opened stadium. The venue, which is also the home field for Lionel Messi and the reigning Major League Soccer champions, will host León's performance.
León, a multi-Grammy and Latin Grammy winner, expressed a sense of responsibility for being the inaugural performer. "Being the first one to play in this iconic stadium — it's new but already iconic because of the team — I see this with much responsibility," León told The Associated Press in an interview. He hopes his performance inspires emerging artists in his genre and others, demonstrating that "nothing is impossible."
Described as a blend of country, rock, and reggaeton, León's music has transcended traditional genre boundaries. He has previously performed at prominent events such as Coachella and the Grand Ole Opry. He is also slated to be the first Latino artist to hold a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, with shows scheduled for September.
León's musical journey has been marked by an emphasis on authenticity. He noted a period where he considered quitting music but returned because it was his passion. "I decided to do what I love, what I love, what I like, what I feel, what made me happy," he said. "I never did music because of money or to be famous." This approach has led him to prioritize being a trendsetter over following trends, a philosophy that has opened significant opportunities, including this performance at Inter Miami's stadium.
León, who is a fan of the World Cup and Real Madrid, expressed his disbelief and pride at performing at the stadium. "I'm so happy for what we've accomplished. I'm just proud to be here at the house of Inter Miami, the Messi house, the David Beckham house. Putting my name alongside these names, it's something incredible for me, something that I still cannot believe."
