Michelle Wylie finally learned the identity of an uninvited man who appeared in photos from her November 2021 wedding after a four-year search ended this week when a social-media influencer reposted the image.
Wylie, 38, who married her husband John at the Carlton Hotel in Prestwick, Ayrshire, said she noticed the unfamiliar man as soon as she received a sample of the wedding pictures and that no one at the reception recalled him. She repeatedly shared the photograph on Facebook in hopes someone would identify him before contacting content creator Dazza, who has more than 400,000 Facebook followers and 129,000 TikTok subscribers. Two hours after Dazza posted the photos, viewers identified the man as Andrew Helliman, 33, a painter and decorator.
Helliman told reporters he had not intended to crash the wedding. He said he had been invited as a plus one when his partner served as a bridesman for a friend named Michaela. According to Helliman, the partner mistakenly gave him the Carlton Hotel address; the wedding he had been invited to was actually at the Great Western Hotel in Ayr. Running late, Helliman said he arrived at the Carlton minutes before the ceremony and assumed the bagpiper and other outward signs of celebration indicated he had reached the correct venue.
"I was at the wrong wedding!" Helliman told SWNS after seeing his image on Dazza's page. He said he had only met the bride and expected to know at least one other person at the event; that he knew no one else did not raise alarm bells until the bride began to walk down the aisle. Mortified, Helliman said he remained seated through the ceremony to avoid causing a scene and slipped out afterward to attend the intended wedding.
Photographers captured Helliman during Wylie's ceremony, and those images formed the basis of her long-running search. Wylie said she and her family had repeatedly asked friends whether anyone recognized the man but received no answers until the influencer reposted the photographs. Wylie said she was surprised and amused when Helliman’s account of the mix-up emerged.
The pair met this week after Dazza's post connected them. Wylie described the meeting as "unbelievable" and said she "could not stop laughing" when she heard Helliman’s explanation. She added the encounter had become an unexpected and fond anecdote from the couple's wedding day and said she wished Helliman had stayed for the reception rather than leaving.
Wylie said the two plan to keep in touch. The episode highlights how widely shared images and influencer amplification can resolve long-standing personal mysteries, and it provided a light-hearted coda to a day that both Wylie and Helliman now recount with amusement. Wylie said the story has "put a lot of smiles on people’s faces," and both described the outcome as a lucky and memorable twist to a wedding day.
The Carlton Hotel and the Great Western Hotel did not provide comment to media reports. Dazza's repost of Wylie's photograph prompted the identification and subsequent reunion, according to Wylie and Helliman's accounts to regional news outlets.
