Bob Mackie, the celebrated fashion and costume designer renowned for creating show-stopping ensembles for stars like Cher, Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, and Tina Turner, died Monday. He was 87.

His passing was announced via a post on his official Instagram account, which stated, "It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today." The statement continued, "He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world."

Mackie's career began to take flight after designing for Mitzi Gaynor, followed by a significant role creating costumes for "The Carol Burnett Show." He remained with the popular variety series for its entire 11-season run.

Among his most unforgettable creations was Cher's iconic feathered ensemble worn to the 1986 Academy Awards. Throughout his career, Mackie garnered nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award for "The Cher Show," and three Academy Award nominations.

Mackie himself once commented on his influence, noting, "Nobody was allowed to even design a halter dress until Cher started wearing them on Sonny & Cher [in the ‘70s], and then all of a sudden they were in everybody’s collection. And then girls were showing way more skin than they should have, because Cher was showing more skin than she should have. But she looked good in it."

Mackie's distinctive style, characterized by sequins, feathers, beads, and theatrical flair, cemented his status as one of Hollywood's most recognizable costume designers. His designs have continued to resonate, with contemporary stars frequently referencing or re-wearing his archival pieces.

Sabrina Carpenter has notably incorporated vintage Mackie designs into her appearances, including a sparkling silver-and-white gown originally created for Madonna's 1991 Academy Awards performance, which Carpenter wore to the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
