Reality television personality Ashley Cain has issued a statement addressing past social media posts containing explicit and offensive language directed at women. Cain stated he is "not proud" of the comments, which were made over a decade ago, and acknowledged that a younger version of himself made them at a time when he had "a lot of growing up to do."
The BBC has reportedly cancelled future projects with Cain, including a forthcoming documentary series, following the unearthed remarks. The comments, which appeared on Cain's now-deleted X account, reportedly included terms like "slags," "bitches," and "sluts," alongside jokes about violence against women.
In an Instagram post, Cain emphasized the importance of accountability and personal growth. He explained that the loss of his professional football career due to injury at the time contributed to feelings of being "lost, frustrated and unsure of where my life was heading." He suggested that reality television then presented an opportunity but also led him into a world where a "provocative personality" was rewarded.
Cain also reflected on the profound impact of his daughter Azaylia's death from cancer in 2021, stating it had "changed me forever" and that he has since dedicated his life to honoring her legacy and supporting families affected by childhood cancer. He believes his ability to connect with others, particularly young men, stems from not having lived a perfect life, but rather from experiencing mistakes, loss, and consequences.
He asserted that true growth involves owning one's past and learning from it to become a better person. Cain expressed that it has been "difficult to see these stories return" and that he had hoped people would recognize that change and growth are possible.
